Have You Been Tricked Into Thinking You Need Fish Oil In Your Diet?

By Toneia - 04:38

The common way of thinking is that we need fish oils in our diet, as is promoted by companies selling vitamins such as cod liver oil. Lets clear things up… you DO need Omega 3, docosapentaenoic acid DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These are essential in everyones diets, and they may be found in fish and their oil. However, this isn't the full story. Did you know that fish are unable to make omega 3 for themselves? So the question is, where are they getting this and can we essentially cut out the 'middle man'?

What are other sources of Omega 3’s?
Fish get their omega 3 from algae from the sea. What this means for us as humans is we don't need to get ours from fish- we can go straight to the source. It's important to realise that fish aren't the only source of Omega 3, and in fact getting it from this source isn't the best. Fish sources of Omega 3 can contain harmful metals and plastics, not to mention that fishing is harming the oceans. Let’s face it, no one likes the taste of fish oils anyway so why not so go to the source which more healthy and environmental friendly. There are other sources of omega 3, take flax seed, walnuts, brussels sprouts and chia seeds for example. These have other essential fibres and vitamins along with Omega 3, although this is in smaller amounts than algae and fish oils. It is possible to get all the amount of Omega 3 needed from algae alone, and from supplements like TogetherOceansPure

What are the benefits of Omega 3?
Lowers the risks of heart disease and heart attack.
Can reduce bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol
Reduces high blood pressure
Help reduce stiffness from arthritis
Help with joint movement

What to be mindful of when taking Omega 3?
First if all, it's important that as with any supplement, this is taken as a supplement and not to replace a healthy diet or any medication. There can be reported side effects of taking omega 3 which including loose stools and counter interactions with other medication, which would need to be discussed with a professional.

Omega 3 is essential for a healthy body. Eat foods that are high in omega 3, there are plenty of non- fish sources. You can also take an algae supplement too to ensure you're getting everything you need.
